I remember when I would sit at the piano and the metronome ticking off the time I was attempting to playing. The frustration of playing either too slow or too fast. The joy of getting it right.
Same with our speech, Proverbs 25:11-25;
A word fitly spoken
is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.
Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold
is a wise reprover to a listening ear.
We have all been there when we needed to hear from God and someone either in a blog or in person said just what we needed to hear. It was satisfying and soothing to our souls.
The same in trying to correct someone. Speaking the right words at the right time is very important. If the person is not ready or willing to hear what you have to say then what you say will fall on deaf ears.
So, how can we avoid this?
The first thing is to always seek God in what to say and when to say it. I have a friend that has taught me the importance of prayer when dealing with what to say to people, whether it is speaking encouragement or a rebuke, she takes it to prayer and waits til the next day to act.
Secondly, we need to make sure our words are seasoned with grace. Everything gose down better with “A spoonful of sugar…” Yes, Marry Poppins, advice works with our words too.
