3 Names

Most of us have a first, middle, and last name. As we are finding out God has more than just three names. This week we will look at three different names of God. We will start with Jehovah-Nissi.

As we know Jehovah means God and is the sacred name for Him.  Nissi mean my banner. This name is only used once in Exodus 17:15.  Moses declared about God after the battle with the  Amalekites. This is the battle were Moses stood on top of a hill while Joshua and the army that he had chose fought the Amalekites. As long as Moses help up the staff of God in his hands Israel would look like the victors. When his arms got tired and he lowered them the Amalekites would take control. Aaron and Hur were with Moses, they each stood on the sides of Moses holding up his hands. When the sun had gone down Joshua and his men were overwhelmed the Amalekites.

So why did Moses declare God as his banner? When armies would go to war at that time they would carry the banner of their king in front of them. Israel had no king. They were following God as to what He said to Moses. So by declaring God as his banner, Moses is stating that God is his King.

There are a couple of spiritual concepts here that we need to look at. First, who is our King? Are we following God and doing what He tells us to do no matter what it might look like to others? It may look as though we are facing an impossible task that He has called us to. When God is our banner we must remember 2 Corinthians 5:7;

 For we walk by faith, not by sight.

The second insight we need to grasp is we are not called to live this life alone we need each other. We need to come along our brothers and sisters when they are going through spiritual warfare and lift them up. Likewise, when we are going through a trial, we need to reach out to our spiritual family and let them know how we can pray for them. It is through prayer we can be like Aaron and Hur,to those that are under a heavy burden in a trial.

With God as our King, we are victorious!
