Peter Capaldi, Matt Smith, and David Tennant are just a few of those that have flown around the universe and time in a little blue police box that is bigger on the inside, searching for those that need help and saving them. There, however, is one Time Lord that does not need a T.A.R.D.I.S. to move through time.
So what does this have to do with the High Priestly Prayer?
Glad you asked. Jesus had asked that He would be able to give to those that have decided to follow Him eternal life. In order for Him to do that, Jesus would need outside of the timey–wimey stuff. As we continue on to verse 5, of John chapter 17 NKJV, Jesus asked,
And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.
Did you catch that? Jesus, Himself, stated that He was with God in full glory before the world was created. Back in the first chapter of John we see that nothing was created without Him. So Jesus was at there throughout the creation of everything. Let’s look at some other times Jesus appeared in the Old Testament.
Starting with Genesis 18, when the LORD appeared to Abraham and tells him that Sarah was going to have a baby. Abraham recognized Him as Lord, He had a physical body, and He ate with him. Abraham even to spare the righteous that lived in Sodom, mainly his nephew, Lot and his family.
Again in Genesis 22 the Angel of the LORD, Jesus called out to Abraham and stopped him from killing Issac and provided the ram for a substitute sacrifice. What a lovely picture of what Jesus is about to do on the cross for us as He took our place for our sins as the final sacrifice as He prays for us in John 17.
In Joshua 5:13 – 6:5 He appeared to Joshua as a Man. When Joshua asked Him who He was His answer was that He was the Commander of the Army of the LORD. He instructed Joshua as to how the Battle of Jericho would be fought. I don’t know about you but when the Commander of the LORD’s Army tell me to do something no matter how strange or silly it may seem to me, I’m going to do it. What is amazing that not one of the Israelites were injured when Jericho fell.
Not only did Jesus appear before His birth let’s look at the times He appeared after His death. Starting in John 20 where He appeared to Mary Magdalene by the tomb and later that day while the disciple we locked in a room hiding from the Jews because the body of Jesus was missing, Jesus appeared in the center of the room. The only disciple that missed this was Thomas, so he refused to believe what the other disciples told him. Eight days later locked in the room with the other disciples Jesus appeared and offered Thomas to feel the nail prints and His side, proof to Thomas He was the real deal.
On the road to Emmaus, Jesus just starts walking with a couple of followers after His resurrection and talking with them. Just as they realize who He is, He vanishes.
Lastly, as Saul was on the way to Damascus a bright light blinded him and knocked him to the ground. Jesus announced that He was the one Saul was persecuting. Jesus showed that He loved and cared for even those who are against Him. He came to save them from their sins too.
All of these appearances of Jesus were at throughout different time and places throughout history. None of which, Jesus use a wheezing blue police box to show up in.
