I’m not talking about pizza, steak, apple pie…. What have you fed your soul lately? We go around making sure that we feed our bodies 3 meals or more a day. Many times we will through some candy, cookies, and chips in throughout the day because we feel hungry. Have you listened to your spirit when it tells you that it is hungry? When was last your soul got fed and not just a bite on Sunday morning, but a real good steak? Have you taken a long drink at the Well of Life to quench the thirst in your spirit?
Your words were found, and I ate them,
and your words became to me a joy
and the delight of my heart,
for I am called by your name,
O Lord, God of hosts. Jeremiah 15:16
We don’t have to loo far for His words. He has given them to us, better yet, He brought us to them.
He has brought me to his banqueting place,
And his banner over me is love [waving overhead to protect and comfort me]. Song of Solomon 2:4 AMP
The Bible is His banquet hall for our souls all we have to do it to pick it up and read it. Not just a verse here and there, taking a sampling and not really getting any meat to satisfy the soul. Here are some tips for getting to the meat.
Pick a book of the Bible and read through it verse by verse, chapter by chapter. That is how it is written so why not read it that way. Don’t know where to start here are a few suggestions: John – this gospel was written for the everyday man. Psalm – teaches us about worshipping God. Proverbs – need some wisdom? This book is full of it and will help you deal with your fellow man.
Have a journal next to you as you read. You can read a chapter or take it slow and just a section of the chapter. Write down in the journal the verse, why you chose that verse and how it applies to your life.
Take some time and dig a little deeper into that verse. Find the ingredients that make the verse important. This is where you might need some tools. Bible Gateway has commentaries, multiple versions that help to give a different light, keyword searches, and much more tools in the study tab. Blue Letter Bible is where I go to use the Strong’s. It has taken me some time to use it online but this is my favorite spot to go. Strong’s gives you the Hebrew or Greek meaning of the words. You’ll want to include this in your journal so you can look at it later.
Pray and ask God to help you apply what you read to your life. Reading it is the easy part applying it can be hard. That is where the Holy Spirit comes in teaching us in His ways.
So dig in and feed your spirit.
Great ideas for Bible studying! It’s so true that we can’t ignore our souls. We must be nourished by Jesus, the bread of life!

Great post on feeding our Spirit! When I was younger, I used to be able to read the three chapters a day needed to finish the Bible in a year. Now that it’s harder to get chunks of time together, I’ve discovered the importance of just taking it chapter-by-chapter (or sometimes heading by heading).

As long as you’re getting it in that is the thing Lauren. Glad you can get it in with your little one. She seems like a handful.😀

Thanks Gloria! The children’s pastor that I work with always tells the kids,”Just like you have to eat your food to feed your body, you have to read your food to feed your soul.
