The Avalanche of Sin

When an avalanche happens a skier or snowboarder has to head downhill to pick up speed and veer off to the right or left to get out of the slide. A snowmobile can power its way out of the way. If you do get trapped in the slide swim to the top as long as it is moving keeping a space for air in front of you and your hand above your head as it slows down. Once the slide stops it is like concrete and you can’t move. Sin is like an avalanche when you are overtaken by it you are trapped and can’t get out of it without being rescued.

Sin will incase us like an avalanche does faster than we know it. In Proverbs 6:16-19 ESV, we find a list of things God hates. In the list, one of the things God hates is a lying tongue. The thing about lies is you can’t stop with one. You tell one lie then you tell another lie and another and so on … to keep the first lie from being found out. Soon you are buried by a mountain of lies and sinking fast in the stress of remembering who you told want to.

There are six things that the Lord hates,
seven that are an abomination to him:
haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that make haste to run to evil,
a false witness who breathes out lies,
and one who sows discord among brothers.

When we are burried underneath the avalanche of sin there is nothing that we can to free ourselves from it. We have to be rescued. Unlike those who are caught in a snow avalanche, we don’t have to wait for the rescue. We just reach out to Jesus and ask Him to forgive us for our sins and He is faithful to do so.
