God has promised something about those He puts in spiritual leaders over us when we return to Him. Let’s take a look as to what God wants for our leaders in Jeremiah 3:15 ESV.
And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.
The Hebrew word for shepherd is ra`ah, it is a verb, besides shepherd it means — feed, pastor, herdmen, keep, companion, company, devour, eat, entreat… This is not a desk job it is a very active job. A shepherd has to lead the sheep to a place where the can eat. Feeding young lamb with milk is a one on one work. To keep the sheep together is a constant effort chasing those who stray away. A pastor is constantly on the move watching over his flock that God has entrusted to him.
A shepherd is going to be following God closely so close he will be leading from the heart of God. The word heart, leb, means — mind, midst, understanding, wisdom, friendly, kindly… Not only is a shepherd going to be seeking God to lead him he will also show traits of God in his life.
A shepherd is going to be feeding his flock God’s knowledge which is found in the Bible. Which will lead to an understanding of who God is and bring about a personal relationship with Him.
