Why do we always see Mary in a white tunic and a blue wrap? Is that even acurate for the times? During the time period of ancient Rome, white was for the well to do and often politicans. Sheep wool and goat hair are what most country people and poor wore. The women would work at home and dye the yarn with dye made from the local vegetation yeilding more earth tones in color.
We don’t know what Mary was doing when Gabriel appeared to her. She could have been dyeing yarn, spinning wool, weaving… What we do know is her response after the angle explained everything.
And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Luke 1:38 ESV
What Mary didn’t do.
- She did’t stop to think what it would be like to raise the Son of God
- She didn’t think what people would say about her
- Nor did she stress how her family would deal with it
- There was no but wait, what about Joseph
She accept by faith God would take care of everything.
- Dealing with siblings
- When God’s Son was missing
- What people said about him
- When Simeon’s prophecy came true
Mary trusted God through it all. Most of all she shined the Light of God.
